Pet adoption is the goal of an animal rescue or animal rescue organisation. These rescue groups accept unwanted, abandoned, or abused pets, and work to find them homes. Many rescue groups were started and run by volunteers. These people take pets into their homes to care for them. There are three classes for pet or monkey rescue in India by monkey catcher.
Rescue groups are available for almost all pets (reptile rescues or rabbit rescues), but they are most commonly for dogs and cats. Rescue groups may have specialized groups or breeds for animals with multiple types of breeds. There might be rescue organizations for Labrador Retrievers and hunting dogs. Large-dog rescue teams may also exist.
Rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals has been done by animal rescue organizations. These animals are usually released into wild when possible. They may also be used to breed endangered species.

Petfinder.org is a well-known umbrella organization for animal rescue organisations. It offers an online searchable database of over 13,000 shelters across the United States. The American Kennel Club maintains a database that includes contacts from breed clubs with information on rescue groups for purebred American dog breeds.
Many shelters work with rescue organizations because shelters who have difficulty placing otherwise healthy and well-mannered animals would prefer them to be adopted. Shelters might have limited space but rescue groups can often find volunteers in their homes that have space for the animal's temporary placement. Old Dog Haven and other rescue groups work with older animals that would otherwise be subject to county pounds. A lack of foster homes and overcrowding result in the deaths of 3-4 million cats or dogs each year.
In the United Kingdom shelters and rescue organisations are described by the blanket term rescue. They have their own premises, purchase accommodation from commercially licensed kennels or run a network with foster homes that allow volunteers to keep the animals until adoption.
Dog pounds are typically referred as Kennels with a council contract for taking in stray pets. Some dog pounds also provide rescue and rehoming services and operate a service called a "pound". Some rescue groups collaborate with pounds to transport rescue dogs. A dog taken in as a Stray to the UK pound must remain there for seven days before being euthanized or rehomed.
There are three classes for pet rescue in India:
A municipal shelter is an animal shelter that takes in abandoned and stray pets.
A no-kill shelter (often private) is one that has specific policies which require that no pet-worthy, healthy animal be put down.
Volunteer foster homes are the most common way that not-for-profit rescue agencies operate. These rescue organisations also follow a no-kill policy.
Modern rescue organizations that are not for profit now focus not only on rescuing animals, but also on rehabilitation and training them. It is difficult for severely abused animals to be moved from their environment to a new place quickly. Specialized, trained rescue personnel must detect signs of aggression and anxiety in order to treat them. Each animal's recovery is different. Some animals may be able to recover quickly, while others will need to continue experiencing trauma symptoms.
