The monkey plague in Chandni Chowk, Tis Hazari Court and the surrounding parks has left the North Delhi Municipal Corporation unable to stop it from raising the remuneration for monkey catchers per capture to Rs1,200 to Rs1,800.
At the meeting of the standing committee of the north body, the proposal was presented.
It has been hard to find monkey catchers. It is not easy to find monkey catchers even if someone is available. They switch to South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), once they learn of the Rs2,400 per catch payment," read the proposal from the north corporation's veterinary services department.
Simians call north Delhi home because they have made large swathes of the Ridge, which is surrounded by hills and forests, their home. The monkey population at the Hindu Rao Hospital is large enough to scare patients. The Delhi Police receives a lot of requests to address the monkey problem during VIP movement, particularly on Independence Day and Republic Day. A senior official from the north said that the threat of simians biting politicians during these events was very real.
Officials stated that there are currently only two such people in the north corporation. "In 2018, 249 monkeys had been captured, but only 65 monkeys were caught in 2019," he said. He said that there were 554 cases in 2018 of monkey bites.
However, several political leaders who attended Friday's meeting of north said that the job is actually held by the Forest Department of Delhi Government. The Forest Department is responsible for managing monkeys and their habitat. They are protected by the Wildlife Protection Act (1972). Jai Prakash (standing committee chairperson for the North Delhi corporation), stated that raising the remuneration for monkey catchers would also increase our expenditure.
