Another resident reported that "many farmers have had their crops damaged by the gangs of monkeys who move in large numbers." People are afraid to even go out into the village. Meerabai Suradkar, Upla’s sarpanch (village chief), stated that monkeys have been living within the village for several decades. "But, their number has increased. There are 300 monkeys living in the village. She claimed that the monkeys have damaged many homes' roofs. When she was asked how the monkeys get to the village, her answer was, "There isn't a forest near here, but there are some hills 20-30km away."
Another local stated that monkeys have been eating cotton, maize, and other crops at the village's farms. "They have also caused damage to vehicles." He also said that the village's many homes had suffered damage to their tin roofs.
One woman from the village claimed that while she brings chapattis to her family who are at the farm, the monkeys grab the food. She stated, "If we attempt to drive them away they attack me." A forest department official confirmed that no complaints had been received about monkeys coming from Upla village. If we get any complaints, we'll investigate it."
