Monkey catcher in delhi: The SDMC has finally hired monkey catcher after years of not finding one in spite of numerous advertisements in newspapers in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. This is an all-time high for such specialists to work in the veterinary department at SDMC.
R B S Tyagi is the director of SDMC's veterinary services. He told TOI that two new monkey catchers had been hired. Six more proposals were received in response to our september 13 public notice. The civic body had asked 19 states' wildlife departments to assist them in tackling the monkey problem in Delhi. Lucknow, Hapur, Goa, and Goa also responded positively. We are receiving responses from various districts in UP. Another official stated that these departments are giving us contact information for people and groups who specialize in this work."
South corporation has the highest rates for simians catching at Rs 2,400 per monkey. Rates in other states range from Rs 500 to Rs 1,200. Himachal Pradesh offers Rs 500 per monkey, a state that also has a similar problem. Monkey catchers, despite their lucrative rates, are reluctant to travel to Delhi or leave after a while. Officials claim that these people (catchers), are mostly poor and illiterate workers who can't deal either with police or court cases."
After spending lakhs of rupees advertising for catchers, SDMC had earlier in August written to the wildlife department to provide tarining for 10 of its employees. "Despite repeated requests, they didn't even reply to our mails," Tyagi stated.
Slowly, the number of monkeys that have been captured in the capital has decreased. In 2013-14, over 1000 monkeys were captured. However, it was only 302 monkeys that were captured between 2015-16. Only 189 monkeys were captured last year and moved to Asola Bhatti sanctuary.
Officials stated that there was only one monkey catcher in the area and that no monkeys were captured. The relocation of the monkeys to Asola Bhatti began in 2007, following a Delhi high court order. Over 20,000 monkeys were relocated so far, with more than Rs 10.3 crore being spent by the forest department to feed them.
